[662] "Without thought-conception, without discursive thought": there is thought-conception (vitakka); there is discursive thought (vicāra).
Therein, what is thought-conception?
That which is thinking, thought-conception, … right thought (sammāsaṅkappa) — this is called thought-conception.
Therein, what is discursive thought?
That which is pondering, considering, continual considering, close considering, the continuous connecting of the mind (citta), the sustained contemplating — this is called discursive thought.
Thus this thought-conception and this discursive thought are stilled, quieted, subsided, ended, utterly ended, destroyed, thoroughly destroyed, dried up, wholly dried up, done away with. Therefore it is said: "without thought-conception, without discursive thought."
