[743] Therein, what is loving-kindness (mettā)? That which toward beings is friendliness (metti), the act of friendliness (mettāyanā), the state of friendliness (mettāyitatta), the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) — this is called loving-kindness.
Therein, what is mind (citta)? That which is mind, mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), heart (hadaya), the lucid (paṇḍara), mentality, mind base (manāyatana), mind faculty (manindriya), consciousness (viññāṇa), the consciousness aggregate (viññāṇakkhandha), the corresponding mind-consciousness element (tajjā manoviññāṇadhātu) — this is called mind.
This mind is accompanied by this loving-kindness, arisen together with it, mingled with it, associated with it; therefore it is said, "with a mind accompanied by loving-kindness."
"One direction": the eastern direction, or the western direction, or the northern direction, or the southern direction, or above, or below, or across, or an intermediate direction.
"Pervading": having pervaded, having resolved upon [it].
"He dwells": he moves about, proceeds, protects, keeps going, keeps himself going, fares on, dwells; therefore it is said, "he dwells."
"Likewise the second": just as the one direction, likewise the second direction, likewise the third direction, likewise the fourth direction, likewise above, likewise below, likewise across, likewise the intermediate directions.
"Everywhere, to all as to oneself, the all-encompassing world": this phrase — "everywhere, to all as to oneself, the all-encompassing world" — is an expression comprehending all in all respects, all in every way, without remainder, leaving nothing out.
"With a mind accompanied by loving-kindness": Therein, what is loving-kindness? That which toward beings is friendliness, the act of friendliness, the state of friendliness, the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness — this is called loving-kindness. Therein, what is mind? That which is mind, mentality, mentation … the corresponding mind-consciousness element — this is called mind. This mind is accompanied by this loving-kindness, arisen together with it, mingled with it, associated with it; therefore it is said, "with a mind accompanied by loving-kindness."
"Abundant": that which is abundant is exalted (mahaggata); that which is exalted is measureless; that which is measureless is without enmity; that which is without enmity is without ill will.
"Pervading": having pervaded, having resolved upon [it]. "He dwells": he moves about … dwells; therefore it is said, "he dwells."
