[871] Therein, what is vanity (cāpalya)? The adorning of the robe (cīvara), the adorning of the bowl (patta), the adorning of the lodging (senāsana), the adorning, the embellishing, whether of this putrid body or of external requisites (parikkhāra); playing, dallying, greediness, the state of greediness, frivolousness, vanity — this is called vanity.
