[1357] S. In every case, for one who is thinking, who is pondering, is the diffusion of thought (vitakka-vipphāra) sound?
P. Yes.
S. Is the sound that is the diffusion of thought cognizable by the ear (sota-viññeyya)? Does it impinge upon the ear? Does it come into the range of the ear?
P. It should not be said so. …
S. Is it not so that the sound that is the diffusion of thought is not cognizable by the ear, does not impinge upon the ear, and does not come into the range of the ear?
P. Yes.
S. If the sound that is the diffusion of thought is not cognizable by the ear, does not impinge upon the ear, and does not come into the range of the ear, then surely it should not be said: "In every case, for one who is thinking, who is pondering, the diffusion of thought is sound."
