Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 1374

[1374] [Paravādin:] Is it not to be said that one is endowed with the past and the future? [Sakavādin:] Yes. [Paravādin:] But is there not one who meditates in the eight liberations (aṭṭha vimokkhā), who is a gainer at will (nikāmalābhī) of the four jhānas, a gainer of the nine attainments of the successive dwellings (anupubbavihāra-samāpatti)? [Sakavādin:] Yes. [Paravādin:] If there is one who meditates in the eight liberations, who is a gainer at will of the four jhānas, a gainer of the nine attainments of the successive dwellings, then indeed, good sir, it must be said that one is endowed with the past and the future. The Discussion of the Past, the Future, and the Present (Atītānāgatapaccuppannakathā) is concluded. The Ninth Chapter (vagga) is concluded. Its summary (uddāna): The abandoning of the fetters (saṃyojana) for one who sees the advantage (ānisaṃsa); the fetter with the Deathless (amata) as object; form (rūpa) as having an object (sārammaṇa); the latent tendencies (anusaya) as without object (anārammaṇa), and knowledge (ñāṇa) just so; with the past and the future as object— the mind (citta); all mind as attended by thought (vitakka); for one thinking and examining (vicāra) in every way, sound as the diffusion of thought (vitakka-vipphāra); speech as not in accordance with the mind; bodily action (kāyakamma) just so; endowed with the past and the future. ____________ Discussion of Cessation (Nirodhakathā)
