[1396] Sakavādin: The five consciousnesses (pañca viññāṇā) have mental engagement (ābhoga)?
Paravādin: Yes.
S.: Is it not the case that the five consciousnesses have arisen bases (vatthu) and arisen objects (ārammaṇa)?
P.: Yes.
S.: If the five consciousnesses have arisen bases and arisen objects, then indeed you should not say, "The five consciousnesses have mental engagement." …
S.: Is it not the case that the five consciousnesses have pre-arisen bases and pre-arisen objects; internal bases and external objects; intact bases and intact objects; diverse bases and diverse objects; that they do not experience one another's resort and domain (gocara-visaya); that they do not arise without adverting (samannāhāra); that they do not arise without attention (manasikāra); that they do not arise uninterspersed [with other consciousness]; and that they do not arise neither before nor after [one another, i.e., simultaneously]? Is it not the case that the five consciousnesses do not arise in immediate succession (samanantarā) to one another?
P.: Yes.
S.: If the five consciousnesses do not arise in immediate succession to one another, then indeed you should not say, "The five consciousnesses have mental engagement."
