[1399] Paravādin: Should it not be said: "The five consciousnesses (pañca viññāṇā) are accompanied by mental engagement (sābhoga)"?
Sakavādin: Yes.
Paravādin: But was it not said by the Blessed One: "Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, having seen a form (rūpa) with the eye, is one who grasps at the sign (nimitta) … is not one who grasps at the sign … having touched a tangible object (phoṭṭhabba) with the body, is one who grasps at the sign … is not one who grasps at the sign"? Is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
Sakavādin: Yes.
Paravādin: Then indeed the five consciousnesses are accompanied by mental engagement. …
