[1662] P.: Should it not be said that form (rūpa) is a root-cause (hetu)? S.: Yes. P.: But are not the primary elements (mahābhūta) the root-cause—by way of derivation (upādāya-hetu)—of the derived material phenomena (upādāya-rūpa)? S.: Yes. P.: If the primary elements are the root-cause, by way of derivation, of the derived material phenomena, then indeed, good sir, it should be said that form is a root-cause.
