[1815] [Sakavādin:] There is no knowledge (ñāṇa) for an ordinary person (puthujjana)? [Paravādin:] Yes. [Sakavādin:] Could an ordinary person enter upon the first jhāna (paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ)? [Paravādin:] Yes. [Sakavādin:] If an ordinary person could enter upon the first jhāna, then indeed, good sir, you should not say: "There is no knowledge for an ordinary person." #1 Burmese and European editions read: "yogagjemato jaṃsati."
