[1824] P. Are there no animals (tiracchānagata) among the devas? S. Yes (āmantā). P. But is there not, there [among the devas], the great elephant (hatthināga) named Erāvaṇa, a divine vehicle yoked to a thousand horses? S. Yes. P. If there exists there the great elephant named Erāvaṇa, a divine vehicle yoked to a thousand horses, then indeed, good sir, you should say: "There are animals among the devas."
