[794] [Sakavādin:] The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka puggala) does not have the five faculties (pañcindriyāni)?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] But was it not said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties (indriya). Which five? The faith faculty (saddhindriya), the energy faculty (viriyindriya), the mindfulness faculty (satindriya), the concentration faculty (samādhindriya), and the wisdom faculty (paññindriya) — these, bhikkhus, are the five faculties. It is through the completeness and fulfilment of these five faculties, bhikkhus, that one is an arahant; with them weaker than that, one is practicing for the realization of arahantship; with them weaker than that, one is a non-returner (anāgāmī); with them weaker than that, one is practicing for the realization of the fruit of non-returning; with them weaker than that, one is a once-returner (sakadāgāmī); with them weaker than that, one is practicing for the realization of the fruit of once-returning; with them weaker than that, one is a stream-enterer (sotāpanna); with them weaker than that, one is practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry. But one in whom, bhikkhus, these five faculties are altogether and in every way completely absent — him I declare to be 'an outsider, one standing in the faction of worldlings (puthujjana)'"¹ — does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] Is the eighth person an outsider, one standing in the faction of worldlings?
[Paravādin:] It should not be said thus. …
[Sakavādin:] Then indeed the eighth person has the five faculties.
