[110] Now at that time a certain shaven-headed smith's boy (kammārabhaṇḍu), having quarreled with his mother and father, went to the monastery and went forth among the bhikkhus. Then the mother and father of that shaven-headed smith's boy, searching for him, went to the monastery and asked the bhikkhus: "Venerable sirs, have you perhaps seen a boy of such-and-such appearance?"
The bhikkhus, precisely those who did not know, said, "We do not know"; precisely those who had not seen, said, "We have not seen him."
Then the mother and father of that shaven-headed smith's boy, searching for him, saw that he had gone forth among the bhikkhus, and they criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, are shameless, of bad morals, speakers of falsehood. Knowing full well, they said, 'We do not know'; seeing plainly, they said, 'We have not seen him.' This boy has gone forth among the bhikkhus!"
Bhikkhus heard the mother and father of that shaven-headed smith's boy criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, I allow the Saṅgha to be informed by announcement (apalokana) for the act of shaving the head (bhaṇḍukamma)."
