[35] Then the Blessed One, having completed the rains residence, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, through wise attention (yoniso manasikāra), through wise right striving (sammappadhāna), I have attained the unsurpassed liberation (anuttarā vimutti), I have realized the unsurpassed liberation. You too, bhikkhus, through wise attention, through wise right striving, have attained the unsurpassed liberation, have realized the unsurpassed liberation."
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he addressed the Blessed One in verse:
"You are bound by Māra's snares,
both those that are divine and those that are human;
you are bound by Māra's bond —
ascetic, you will not escape me!"
[The Blessed One:]
"I am freed from Māra's snares,
both those that are divine and those that are human;
I am freed from Māra's bond —
you are struck down, End-maker (Antaka)!"
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, "The Blessed One knows me, the Sugata knows me," pained and dejected, vanished right there.
