[45] Then, when that night had passed, the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila) Uruvelakassapa approached the Blessed One; having approached, he announced the time to the Blessed One: "It is time, Great Ascetic; the meal is ready."
"You go, Kassapa; I am coming."
Having sent off the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa, and having taken a fruit from the rose-apple tree (jambu) after which Jambudīpa is known, the Blessed One arrived first and sat down in the fire hall (agyāgāra). The jaṭila Uruvelakassapa saw the Blessed One seated in the fire hall; having seen him, he said this to the Blessed One: "By what path have you come, Great Ascetic? I set out before you, yet you, arriving first, are seated in the fire hall."
"Here, Kassapa, having sent you off, I took a fruit from the rose-apple tree after which Jambudīpa is known and, arriving first, sat down in the fire hall. This rose-apple fruit, Kassapa, is perfect in color, perfect in fragrance, and perfect in flavor. If you wish, eat it."
"Enough, Great Ascetic. You yourself brought it; you yourself eat it."
Then it occurred to the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa: "The Great Ascetic is truly of great psychic power (mahiddhika), of great might, in that, having sent me off first, he took a fruit from the rose-apple tree after which Jambudīpa is known and, arriving first, sat down in the fire hall. But he is certainly not an arahant, as I am."
Then the Blessed One, having eaten the meal of the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa, dwelt in that same forest grove.
Then, when that night had passed, the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa approached the Blessed One; having approached, he announced the time to the Blessed One: "It is time, Great Ascetic; the meal is ready."
"You go, Kassapa; I am coming." Having sent off the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa — not far from the rose-apple tree after which Jambudīpa is known there is a mango tree … not far from that, an emblic myrobalan tree … not far from that, a chebulic myrobalan tree … having gone to Tāvatiṃsa and taken a pāricchattaka flower, the Blessed One arrived first and sat down in the fire hall. The jaṭila Uruvelakassapa saw the Blessed One seated in the fire hall; having seen him, he said this to the Blessed One: "By what path have you come, Great Ascetic? I set out before you, yet you, arriving first, are seated in the fire hall."
"Here, Kassapa, having sent you off, I went to Tāvatiṃsa, took a pāricchattaka flower and, arriving first, sat down in the fire hall. This pāricchattaka flower, Kassapa, is perfect in color and perfect in fragrance."
Then it occurred to the jaṭila Uruvelakassapa: "The Great Ascetic is truly of great psychic power, of great might, in that, having sent me off first, he went to Tāvatiṃsa, took a pāricchattaka flower and, arriving first, sat down in the fire hall. But he is certainly not an arahant, as I am."
