[97] Now at that time, when teachers and preceptors had departed, or had disrobed, or had died, or had gone over to another faction, the bhikkhus did not know that their dependence (nissaya) had lapsed. They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, there are these five lapsings of dependence (nissayapaṭippassaddhi) from a preceptor (upajjhāya): the preceptor has departed, or has disrobed, or has died, or has gone over to another faction; or a command [of dismissal] is the fifth. These, bhikkhus, are the five lapsings of dependence from a preceptor.
"Bhikkhus, there are these six lapsings of dependence from a teacher (ācariya): the teacher has departed, or has disrobed, or has died, or has gone over to another faction; a command [of dismissal] is the fifth; or [the pupil] has come together with his preceptor. These, bhikkhus, are the six lapsings of dependence from a teacher."
