[160] Now at that time the bhikkhus' set of three robes was complete, but they had need of water-strainers and of bags. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow requisite-cloth (parikkhāracoḷa)."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "Those cloths that have been allowed by the Blessed One — the three robes (ticīvara), the rains-bathing cloth (vassikasāṭikā), the sitting cloth (nisīdana), the sheet (paccattharaṇa), the itch-covering cloth (kaṇḍupaṭicchādi), the face-wiping cloth (mukhapuñchanacoḷa), and requisite-cloth — should all of these be determined, or should they be assigned?" They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the three robes to be determined, not to be assigned; the rains-bathing cloth to be determined for the four months of the rains, and after that to be assigned; the sitting cloth to be determined, not to be assigned; the sheet to be determined, not to be assigned; the itch-covering cloth to be determined for as long as the ailment lasts, and after that to be assigned; the face-wiping cloth to be determined, not to be assigned; requisite-cloth to be determined, not to be assigned."
Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "What is the smallest robe-cloth that should be assigned?" They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the smallest robe-cloth to be assigned: eight fingerbreadths in length by the Sugata fingerbreadth, and four fingerbreadths in width."
Now at that time the rag-robe (paṃsukūla) of the Venerable Mahākassapa was heavy. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow rough stitching to be done with thread." A corner was uneven. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the uneven corner to be removed." The threads frayed out. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a border strip (anuvāta) and an edge-binding (paribhaṇḍa) to be put on." Now at that time the panels of the saṅghāṭi came apart. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow cross-stitching in an eight-square pattern (aṭṭhapadaka) to be done."
