[21] Then the Blessed One, having passed much of the night in the open air, entered the dwelling. The venerable Soṇa also, having passed much of the night in the open air, entered the dwelling. Then the Blessed One, having risen at the time of dawn toward the close of the night, invited the venerable Soṇa: "Bhikkhu, may the Dhamma occur to you to speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," the venerable Soṇa replied in assent to the Blessed One, and he recited by intonation (sarabhañña) all the suttas of the Aṭṭhakavagga in their entirety. Then the Blessed One, at the conclusion of the venerable Soṇa's intoned recitation, expressed his great approval: "Good, good, bhikkhu! Well grasped by you, bhikkhu, are the suttas of the Aṭṭhakavagga, well attended to, well borne in mind. You are endowed with beautiful speech—distinct, faultless, making the meaning clear. How many rains do you have, bhikkhu?"
"I have one rains, Blessed One."
"But why, bhikkhu, did you take so long?"
"For a long time, venerable sir, I have seen the danger (ādīnava) in sensual pleasures; but the household life is confining, with many duties, with many things to be done."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
Having seen the danger in the world,
having known the Dhamma free from acquisitions (nirūpadhi),
the noble one does not delight in evil;
the pure one does not delight in evil.
