[240] Now at that time the bhikkhus who sided with the suspended one performed the Uposatha and performed acts of the Saṅgha right there within the boundary (sīmā); but the suspending bhikkhus went outside the boundary and performed the Uposatha and performed acts of the Saṅgha. Then a certain suspending bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, those bhikkhus who side with the suspended one perform the Uposatha and perform acts of the Saṅgha right there within the boundary; but we, venerable sir, the suspending bhikkhus, go outside the boundary and perform the Uposatha and perform acts of the Saṅgha."
"Bhikkhu, if those bhikkhus who side with the suspended one perform the Uposatha and perform acts of the Saṅgha right there within the boundary in accordance with the motion (ñatti) and the proclamation (anussāvanā) laid down by me, those acts of theirs will be lawful, unshakeable, and fit to stand. And if you, bhikkhu, the suspending bhikkhus, perform the Uposatha and perform acts of the Saṅgha right there within that same boundary in accordance with the motion and the proclamation laid down by me, those acts of yours too will be lawful, unshakeable, and fit to stand. Why is that? Those bhikkhus belong to a different communion from you, and you belong to a different communion from them.
"Bhikkhu, there are these two grounds for belonging to a different communion (nānāsaṃvāsakabhūmi): either one makes oneself of a different communion by oneself, or the united Saṅgha suspends one for not seeing (an offence), for not making amends (for it), or for not relinquishing (it). These, bhikkhu, are the two grounds for belonging to a different communion.
"Bhikkhu, there are these two grounds for belonging to the same communion (samānasaṃvāsakabhūmi): either one makes oneself of the same communion by oneself, or the united Saṅgha restores one who has been suspended for not seeing, for not making amends, or for not relinquishing. These, bhikkhu, are the two grounds for belonging to the same communion."
