[242] Now at that time, bhikkhus in the midst of the Saṅgha, having become quarrelsome, having become contentious, and having fallen into dispute, dwelt stabbing one another with the daggers of the mouth. They were unable to settle that legal issue (adhikaraṇa).
Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, here bhikkhus in the midst of the Saṅgha, having become quarrelsome, having become contentious, and having fallen into dispute, dwell stabbing one another with the daggers of the mouth. They are unable to settle that legal issue. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One, out of compassion, would approach those bhikkhus." The Blessed One consented by silence.
Then the Blessed One approached those bhikkhus; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One said this to those bhikkhus: "Enough, bhikkhus! No quarreling, no contention, no strife, no disputing!"
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu who spoke contrary to the Dhamma (adhammavādī) said this to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One, venerable sir, the Lord of the Dhamma, wait. Let the Blessed One, venerable sir, dwell untroubled, devoted to a pleasant abiding in the present life. It is we who will be known by this quarreling, contention, strife, and disputing."
A second time the Blessed One said this to those bhikkhus: "Enough, bhikkhus! No quarreling, no contention, no strife, no disputing!"
A second time that bhikkhu who spoke contrary to the Dhamma said this to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One, venerable sir, the Lord of the Dhamma, wait. Let the Blessed One, venerable sir, dwell untroubled, devoted to a pleasant abiding in the present life. It is we who will be known by this quarreling, contention, strife, and disputing."
