[251] Then it occurred to the lay followers (upāsakā) of Kosambī: "These venerable Kosambī bhikkhus have been the doers of much harm to us; wearied by them, the Blessed One has departed. Come now, let us neither pay homage to the venerable Kosambī bhikkhus, nor rise up for them, nor perform for them the salutation with joined palms (añjalikamma) and the proper acts of respect; let us not honor them, not revere them, not esteem them, not venerate them; and even when they come for alms, let us not give them almsfood. Thus, being not honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated by us, and reduced to being without honor, they will either depart, or disrobe, or make amends with the Blessed One." Then the lay followers of Kosambī neither paid homage to the Kosambī bhikkhus, nor rose up for them, nor performed for them the salutation with joined palms and the proper acts of respect; they did not honor them, did not revere them, did not esteem them, did not venerate them; and even when they came for alms, they did not give them almsfood.
Then the Kosambī bhikkhus, being not honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated by the lay followers of Kosambī, and reduced to being without honor, said thus: "Come, friends, let us go to Sāvatthī and settle this legal issue (adhikaraṇa) in the presence of the Blessed One." Then the Kosambī bhikkhus, having set the lodgings in order and taking their bowls and robes, set out for Sāvatthī.
