[51] Now at that time Rājagaha was stricken with famine. People brought salt, oil, husked rice, and hard food to the monastery. The bhikkhus stored these things outside; vermin ate them and thieves carried them off. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow you to store them inside."
Having stored them inside, they cooked them outside; scavengers who lived on leavings crowded around. The bhikkhus ate ill at ease. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow you to cook inside."
During the famine, the stewards (kappiyakāraka) carried off the greater portion and gave only the lesser portion to the bhikkhus. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow you to cook for yourselves. Bhikkhus, I allow what has been stored inside, what has been cooked inside, and what has been cooked by oneself."
