[53] Now at that time fresh sesame and fresh honey had accrued to a certain brahmin. Then it occurred to that brahmin: "Suppose I were to give the fresh sesame and fresh honey to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha." Then that brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk of greeting was concluded, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, that brahmin said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the honorable Gotama, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, consent to accept tomorrow's meal from me."
The Blessed One consented by silence. Then that brahmin, understanding the Blessed One's consent, departed. Then, when that night had passed, that brahmin had excellent hard and soft food prepared and had the time announced to the Blessed One: "It is time, honorable Gotama; the meal is ready."
Then the Blessed One, in the morning, having dressed and taking bowl and robe, approached that brahmin's dwelling; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Then that brahmin, with his own hand, served and satisfied the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with excellent hard and soft food, and when the Blessed One had finished eating and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, he sat down to one side. As that brahmin sat to one side, the Blessed One instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened him with a talk on the Dhamma, then rose from his seat and departed.
Then, not long after the Blessed One had departed, it occurred to that brahmin: "Those things for the sake of which I invited the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha, thinking, 'I shall give fresh sesame and fresh honey' — I forgot to give them. Suppose I were to have the fresh sesame and fresh honey brought to the monastery in jars and pots." Then that brahmin, having had the fresh sesame and fresh honey brought to the monastery in jars and pots, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, that brahmin said this to the Blessed One: "Honorable Gotama, those things for the sake of which I invited the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha, thinking, 'I shall give fresh sesame and fresh honey' — I forgot to give them. May the honorable Gotama accept from me the fresh sesame and fresh honey."
"Well then, brahmin, give it to the bhikkhus."
Now at that time, it being a famine, the bhikkhus, having accepted even a small amount, would signal they had had enough, and they would refuse even after reflection; thus the whole Saṅgha had refused further food. The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not accept.
"Accept it, bhikkhus, and eat it. I allow, bhikkhus, one who has finished eating and has refused further food to eat what is brought back from there, even though it is not left over."
