[79] "There is, Sīha, a way (pariyāya) in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of non-doing (akiriyavāda); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of non-doing, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of doing (kiriyavāda); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of doing, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of annihilation (ucchedavāda); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of annihilation, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one given to disgust (jegucchī); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of disgust, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is an abolisher (venayika); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of abolition, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a mortifier (tapassī); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of mortification, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one rid of the womb (apagabbha); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of being rid of the womb, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"There is, Sīha, a way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one consoled (assattha); he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of consolation, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of non-doing; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of non-doing, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, assert the non-doing of bodily misconduct, of verbal misconduct, and of mental misconduct; I assert the non-doing of the many kinds of evil, unwholesome dhammas. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of non-doing; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of non-doing, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of doing; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of doing, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, assert the doing of good bodily conduct, of good verbal conduct, and of good mental conduct; I assert the doing of the many kinds of wholesome dhammas. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of doing; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of doing, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of annihilation; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of annihilation, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, assert the annihilation of lust (rāga), of hatred, and of delusion; I assert the annihilation of the many kinds of evil, unwholesome dhammas. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a proponent of annihilation; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of annihilation, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one given to disgust; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of disgust, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, am disgusted by bodily misconduct, by verbal misconduct, and by mental misconduct; I teach the Dhamma for disgust at engaging in the many kinds of evil, unwholesome dhammas. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one given to disgust; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of disgust, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is an abolisher; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of abolition, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, teach the Dhamma for the abolition of lust, of hatred, and of delusion; I teach the Dhamma for the abolition of the many kinds of evil, unwholesome dhammas. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is an abolisher; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of abolition, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a mortifier; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of mortification, and thereby he trains his disciples'? I, Sīha, declare that evil, unwholesome dhammas — bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, and mental misconduct — are to be burned away (tapanīya). One in whom, Sīha, the evil, unwholesome dhammas that are to be burned away have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, so that they are no longer subject to arising in the future — him I call a mortifier. In the Tathāgata, Sīha, the evil, unwholesome dhammas that are to be burned away have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, no longer subject to arising in the future. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is a mortifier; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of mortification, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one rid of the womb; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of being rid of the womb, and thereby he trains his disciples'? One for whom, Sīha, future lying in a womb and production of renewed existence have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, so that they are no longer subject to arising in the future — him I call one rid of the womb. For the Tathāgata, Sīha, future lying in a womb and production of renewed existence have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, no longer subject to arising in the future. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one rid of the womb; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of being rid of the womb, and thereby he trains his disciples.'
"And what, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one consoled; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of consolation, and thereby he trains his disciples'? For I, Sīha, am consoled with the supreme consolation (assāsa), and I teach the Dhamma for the sake of consolation, and thereby I train my disciples. This indeed, Sīha, is the way in which one speaking rightly of me could say: 'The ascetic Gotama is one consoled; he teaches the Dhamma for the sake of consolation, and thereby he trains his disciples.'"
