[1] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhus who were followers of Paṇḍuka and Lohitaka, being themselves makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, and creators of legal issues (adhikaraṇa) in the Saṅgha, would approach other bhikkhus who were likewise makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, and creators of legal issues in the Saṅgha, and say this: "Venerables, do not let him defeat you. Counter him forcefully, strength against strength. You are wiser than he, more competent, more learned, and more capable. Do not be afraid of him—we too shall be on your side."
Thereby strife that had not yet arisen arose, and strife that had already arisen conduced to increase and expansion.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes, contented, conscientious, scrupulous, and desirous of the training were annoyed, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhus who are followers of Paṇḍuka and Lohitaka, being themselves makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, and creators of legal issues in the Saṅgha, approach other bhikkhus who are likewise makers of strife, makers of quarrels, makers of disputes, makers of contentious talk, and creators of legal issues in the Saṅgha, and say this: 'Venerables, do not let this one defeat you. Counter him forcefully, strength against strength. You are wiser than he, more competent, more learned, and more capable. Do not be afraid of him—we too shall be on your side'? Thereby strife that had not yet arisen arises, and strife that has already arisen conduces to increase and expansion."
Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
