[174] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus were chewing long tooth-woods (dantakaṭṭha), and with those very ones they struck the novices (sāmaṇera). They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, a long tooth-wood should not be chewed; whoever should chew one, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow a tooth-wood of eight finger-breadths (aṭṭhaṅgula) at most; and a novice should not be struck with it; whoever should strike one, there is an offense of wrong-doing."
