[179] Now at that time, as a certain **bhikkhu** was traveling to Sāvatthī in the Kosalan country, an elephant beset him (pariyuṭṭhāsi) on the road along the way. Then that bhikkhu ran to the foot of a tree, but being scrupulous, he did not climb the tree. The elephant went off by another way. Then that bhikkhu, having gone to Sāvatthī, reported this matter to the bhikkhus. The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. He said: "Bhikkhus, when there is something to be done, I allow one to climb a tree to the height of a man; and in times of danger (āpadāsu), as high as is needed."
