[185] Now at that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, surrounded by a great assembly, sneezed while teaching the Dhamma. The bhikkhus made a loud noise, a great noise, saying: "May the Blessed One live, venerable sir! May the Sublime One (sugata) live!" Because of that noise the Dhamma talk was interrupted.
Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, when one who has sneezed is told 'Live!', would he live or die on that account?"
"Certainly not, venerable sir."
"Bhikkhus, one who has sneezed should not be told 'Live!' Whoever should say so commits an offense of wrong-doing (āpatti dukkaṭassa)."
