[245] Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika lay down with mindfulness directed to the Buddha, thinking, "Tomorrow, at the proper time, I shall go to see that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One." It is said that he rose three times during the night, thinking it was already dawn. Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika approached the Sītavana gate. Non-human beings (amanussā) opened the gate. Then, as the householder Anāthapiṇḍika was going out from the city, the light vanished and darkness appeared. Fear, terror, and horripilation arose in him, and right there he wished to turn back.
