[255] Then, when that night had passed, Anāthapiṇḍika the householder, having had excellent hard food and soft food prepared in the residence of the merchant (seṭṭhi) of Rājagaha, had the time announced to the Blessed One: "It is time, venerable sir; the meal is ready."
Then the Blessed One, in the morning, having dressed, taking bowl and robe, approached the residence of the merchant of Rājagaha; having approached, he sat down on the prepared seat together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Then Anāthapiṇḍika the householder, with his own hand, served and satisfied the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with excellent hard food and soft food; and when the Blessed One had finished eating and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Anāthapiṇḍika the householder said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, consent to my invitation for the rains residence at Sāvatthī."
"Householder, Tathāgatas delight in empty dwellings (suññāgāra)."
"It is understood, Blessed One; it is understood, Fortunate One (Sugata)."
Then the Blessed One, having instructed, encouraged, inspired, and gladdened Anāthapiṇḍika the householder with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat and departed.
