[279] Then it occurred to the bhikkhus who were assigners of lodgings (senāsana): "How, now, should lodgings be assigned?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow you first to count the bhikkhus; having counted the bhikkhus, to count the sleeping-places (seyyā); having counted the sleeping-places, to assign according to the number of sleeping-places." When they assigned according to the number of sleeping-places, sleeping-places were left over. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you to assign according to the number of dwellings (vihāra)." When they assigned according to the number of dwellings, dwellings were left over. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you to assign according to the number of cells (pariveṇa)." When they assigned according to the number of cells, cells were left over. "Bhikkhus, I allow an additional share (anubhāga) also to be given. When an additional share has been taken and another bhikkhu arrives, it need not be given up if [the holder] is unwilling."
