[339] Then Anuruddha the Sakyan approached his mother; having approached, he said this to his mother: "Mother, I wish to go forth from the household life into homelessness. Permit me, mother, to go forth from the household life into homelessness."
When this was said, the mother of Anuruddha the Sakyan said this to Anuruddha the Sakyan: "Dear Anuruddha, you two are my sons — dear, agreeable, and in no way displeasing to me. Even through death I would be parted from you against my will; how then, while you are still living, shall I permit you to go forth from the household life into homelessness?"
A second time … A third time Anuruddha the Sakyan said this to his mother: "Mother, I wish to go forth from the household life into homelessness. Permit me, mother, to go forth from the household life into homelessness."
