[343] Then those Sakyan princes, taking Upāli the barber, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Seated to one side, those Sakyan princes said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, we Sakyans are prideful. This Upāli the barber, venerable sir, has long been our attendant. May the Blessed One let him go forth first. We shall perform for him the acts of homage, of rising up in greeting, of reverential salutation, and of proper respect. In this way the Sakyan pride of us Sakyans will be humbled."
Then the Blessed One let Upāli the barber go forth first, and afterwards those Sakyan princes.
