[365] And the Venerable Sāriputta, having been appointed, entered Rājagaha together with many bhikkhus and made this proclamation concerning Devadatta in Rājagaha: "Formerly Devadatta's nature was one thing; now his nature is another. Whatever Devadatta may do by body or by speech, neither the Buddha, nor the Dhamma, nor the Saṅgha should be seen therein; only Devadatta himself should be seen therein."
Thereupon those people who were without faith, without confidence, and of poor understanding spoke thus: "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, are envious; they envy Devadatta's gain and honor."
But those people who had faith and confidence, who were wise and of good understanding, spoke thus: "This will be no trifling matter, since the Blessed One is having Devadatta proclaimed in Rājagaha."
