[405] "Bhante, 'schism in the Saṅgha (saṅghabheda), schism in the Saṅgha' is spoken of. To what extent, Bhante, is the Saṅgha divided?"
"Here, Upāli, bhikkhus explain non-Dhamma as Dhamma; they explain Dhamma as non-Dhamma; they explain non-Vinaya as Vinaya; they explain Vinaya as non-Vinaya; they explain what was not spoken, not uttered by the Tathāgata as spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata; they explain what was spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata as not spoken, not uttered by the Tathāgata; they explain what was not practiced by the Tathāgata as practiced by the Tathāgata; they explain what was practiced by the Tathāgata as not practiced by the Tathāgata; they explain what was not laid down by the Tathāgata as laid down by the Tathāgata; they explain what was laid down by the Tathāgata as not laid down by the Tathāgata; they explain a non-offense as an offense (āpatti); they explain an offense as a non-offense; they explain a light offense as a heavy offense; they explain a heavy offense as a light offense; they explain an offense with remainder as an offense without remainder; they explain an offense without remainder as an offense with remainder; they explain a gross offense as an offense that is not gross; they explain an offense that is not gross as a gross offense.
On these eighteen grounds they draw away and separate themselves; they perform a separate Uposatha, they perform a separate Pavāraṇā, they perform a separate formal act of the Saṅgha (saṅghakamma). To this extent, Upāli, the Saṅgha is divided."
