[442] Now at that time pupils (antevāsika) did not behave properly toward their teachers (ācariya). Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … were annoyed, criticized, and complained: "How can pupils not behave properly toward their teachers?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that pupils do not behave properly toward their teachers?" "It is true, Blessed One." … Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down for pupil-bhikkhus the duties (vatta) toward teachers, according to which pupil-bhikkhus should behave properly toward their teachers."
