[466] Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, from now on I shall not perform the Uposatha, I shall not recite the Pātimokkha. From now on, bhikkhus, you yourselves should perform the Uposatha, you should recite the Pātimokkha. It is impossible, bhikkhus, there is no occasion, that the Tathāgata should perform the Uposatha, should recite the Pātimokkha, in an impure assembly. And, bhikkhus, the Pātimokkha should not be listened to by a bhikkhu who has an offence (āpatti) upon him; whoever should listen to it commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). I allow you, bhikkhus, to suspend the Pātimokkha for one who, having an offence upon him, listens to the Pātimokkha.
And thus, bhikkhus, should it be suspended. On that Uposatha day, the fourteenth or the fifteenth, when that person is present, it should be declared in the midst of the Saṅgha:
'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. The person named so-and-so has an offence upon him. I suspend the Pātimokkha for him. The Pātimokkha should not be recited while he is present.'
The Pātimokkha is thereby suspended."
