[517] Then the Venerable Ānanda, having learned the eight rules to be respected (garudhamma) in the presence of the Blessed One, approached Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī; and having approached, he said this to Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī: "If you, Gotamī, would accept the eight rules to be respected, that itself will be your full ordination (upasampadā):
A bhikkhunī, even though ordained for a hundred years, must perform respectful salutation, rising up from her seat, reverential salutation with joined palms (añjalikamma), and proper acts of homage (sāmīcikamma) toward a bhikkhu ordained that very day. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
A bhikkhunī must not enter the rains residence in a dwelling where there is no bhikkhu. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
Every half-month a bhikkhunī should expect two things from the Saṅgha of bhikkhus: asking about the uposatha day and approaching for the exhortation. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
Having completed the rains residence, a bhikkhunī must invite correction (pavāraṇā) before both Saṅghas on three grounds: by what has been seen, by what has been heard, or by what is suspected. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
A bhikkhunī who has transgressed a rule to be respected must undertake the half-month penance (pakkhamānatta) before both Saṅghas. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
A probationer (sikkhamānā) who has trained in the training in the six dhammas for two years must seek full ordination from both Saṅghas. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
A bhikkhunī must not in any manner abuse or revile a bhikkhu. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
From this day forward, the way of speech of bhikkhunīs toward bhikkhus is closed; the way of speech of bhikkhus toward bhikkhunīs is not closed. This dhamma too is to be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and is not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
If you, Gotamī, would accept these eight rules to be respected, that itself will be your full ordination."
"Venerable Ānanda, just as a woman or a man—young, youthful, fond of adornment—having washed the head and having received a garland of blue lotuses, or a garland of jasmine, or a garland of atimuttaka flowers, would receive it with both hands and place it upon the head, the noblest part of the body; even so, Venerable Ānanda, do I accept these eight rules to be respected, not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts."
