[643] The Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī heard: "It is said that Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta, wishing to take up this legal issue (adhikaraṇa), is seeking a faction — and it is said he is gaining a faction." Then it occurred to the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī: "This legal issue is harsh and fierce. Whom, indeed, might we gain as a faction, whereby we would be the stronger in this legal issue?" Then it occurred to the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī: "This Venerable Revata is greatly learned, one to whom the tradition has been handed down, a bearer of the Dhamma, a bearer of the Vinaya, a bearer of the mātikās, wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, desirous of the training. If we could gain the Venerable Revata as a faction, thus we would be the stronger in this legal issue."
Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī prepared abundant ascetic requisites: bowls, robes, sitting cloths, needle-cases, waistbands, water strainers, and filters (dhamakaraka). Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī, taking those ascetic requisites, went upstream by boat to Sahajāti; and having disembarked from the boat, they took their meal at the foot of a certain tree.
