[1223] "Venerable sir, how many benefits (ānisaṃsa) are there in spreading the kathina (kaṭhinatthāra)?" "Upāli, there are these five benefits in spreading the kathina. What five? Going about without asking leave (anāmantacāra); going about without taking [the complete set of robes] (asamādānacāra); a group meal (gaṇabhojana); as much robe-cloth as is needed (yāvadatthacīvara); and whatever robe-cloth arises there will be theirs. These, Upāli, are the five benefits in spreading the kathina."
