[351] Intentionally depriving a living being of life, how many offenses (āpatti) does one commit? Intentionally depriving a living being of life, one commits four offenses: He digs a pit without specifying a target, thinking, "Whoever falls in will die" — an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). A human being falls into it and dies — an offense entailing defeat (pārājika). A yakkha, or a peta, or an animal in human form falls into it and dies — a grave offense (thullaccaya). An animal falls into it and dies — an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya). Intentionally depriving a living being of life, one commits these four offenses.
