[144] Now at that time several bhikkhus were walking up and down in the open air.
Then the young student Ambaṭṭha approached those bhikkhus, and having approached, said this to them: "Good sirs, where is the worthy Gotama staying at present? For we have come here to see that worthy Gotama."
Then it occurred to those bhikkhus: "This young student Ambaṭṭha is of a well-known family, and moreover is the pupil of the well-known brahmin Pokkharasāti. Conversation with young gentlemen of such a kind is no burden to the Blessed One." They said this to the young student Ambaṭṭha: "Ambaṭṭha, that is his dwelling, with the door closed. Approach it quietly; without hurrying, enter the porch, clear your throat, and knock on the door-bar. The Blessed One will open the door for you."
Then the young student Ambaṭṭha quietly approached that dwelling with its closed door; without hurrying, he entered the porch, cleared his throat, and knocked on the door-bar. The Blessed One opened the door. The young student Ambaṭṭha entered. The young students too, having entered, exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when they had concluded the courteous and memorable talk of greeting, they sat down to one side.
