[193] "But, brahmin, of these two factors, is it possible to set aside one factor and to designate as a brahmin one possessed of a single factor, so that when he says 'I am a brahmin' he would speak rightly and not fall into false speech (musāvāda)?"
"No indeed, worthy Gotama. For wisdom (paññā) is cleansed by virtue (sīla), and virtue is cleansed by wisdom. Where there is virtue, there is wisdom; where there is wisdom, there is virtue. The virtuous one has wisdom; the wise one has virtue. And virtue and wisdom are declared the foremost in the world. Just as, worthy Gotama, one might wash hand with hand, or wash foot with foot, even so, worthy Gotama, wisdom is cleansed by virtue, and virtue is cleansed by wisdom. Where there is virtue, there is wisdom; where there is wisdom, there is virtue. The virtuous one has wisdom; the wise one has virtue. And virtue and wisdom are declared the foremost in the world."
