[256] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. Then two renunciants — Maṇḍiya the wanderer and Jāliya, the pupil of the wooden-bowl ascetic — approached the Blessed One; having approached, they exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous talk of friendly greeting was concluded, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, those two renunciants said this to the Blessed One: "How is it, friend Gotama — is the soul the same as the body, or is the soul one thing and the body another?"
"Well then, friends, listen and attend carefully; I will speak."
"Yes, friend," those two renunciants replied to the Blessed One.
The Blessed One said this: "Here, friends, a Tathāgata arises in the world, an Arahant, a Perfectly Awakened One … (to be expanded as in the Sāmaññaphala) … Thus, friends, a bhikkhu is accomplished in virtue (sīla). … He enters and dwells in the first jhāna."
