[309] When this was said, Citta Hatthisāriputta said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, at the time when there is the acquisition of a gross self (oḷārika attapaṭilābha), is the acquisition of a mind-made self (manomaya attapaṭilābha) at that time void for him, and is the acquisition of a formless self (arūpa attapaṭilābha) void — is only the acquisition of a gross self true at that time? Venerable sir, at the time when there is the acquisition of a mind-made self, is the acquisition of a gross self at that time void for him, and is the acquisition of a formless self void — is only the acquisition of a mind-made self true at that time? Venerable sir, at the time when there is the acquisition of a formless self, is the acquisition of a gross self at that time void for him, and is the acquisition of a mind-made self void — is only the acquisition of a formless self true at that time?"
"Citta, at the time when there is the acquisition of a gross self, at that time it is not reckoned as the acquisition of a mind-made self, nor is it reckoned as the acquisition of a formless self; at that time it is reckoned only as the acquisition of a gross self. Citta, at the time when there is the acquisition of a mind-made self, at that time it is not reckoned as the acquisition of a gross self, nor is it reckoned as the acquisition of a formless self; at that time it is reckoned only as the acquisition of a mind-made self. Citta, at the time when there is the acquisition of a formless self, at that time it is not reckoned as the acquisition of a gross self, nor is it reckoned as the acquisition of a mind-made self; at that time it is reckoned only as the acquisition of a formless self."
