[344] Then, Kevaṭṭa, that bhikkhu approached Vasavattī the son of the gods (devaputta); and having approached, he said this to Vasavattī the son of the gods: 'Friend, where do these four great elements (mahābhūtā) cease without remainder — namely, the earth element (paṭhavī-dhātu), the water element (āpo-dhātu), the fire element (tejo-dhātu), and the air element (vāyo-dhātu)?' When this was said, Kevaṭṭa, Vasavattī the son of the gods said this to that bhikkhu: 'I too, bhikkhu, do not know where these four great elements cease without remainder — namely, the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the air element. But, bhikkhu, there are gods called the retinue of Brahmā (Brahmakāyikā), more excellent and more sublime than we are; they would know where these four … the air element.' Then, Kevaṭṭa, that bhikkhu attained such a concentration (samādhi) that, with the mind (citta) concentrated, the path leading to Brahmā appeared.
