[13] Then the companions of Sudinna the Kalandaka's son approached Sudinna the Kalandaka's son; having approached, they said this to Sudinna the Kalandaka's son: "Friend Sudinna, you are your mother and father's only son, dear and agreeable to them, raised in comfort, reared in comfort. You, friend Sudinna, know nothing of suffering. Even at your death your mother and father would be parted from you unwillingly; how then, while you are still living, will they permit you to go forth from the home life into homelessness? Get up, friend Sudinna—eat, drink, and amuse yourself. Eating, drinking, and amusing yourself, enjoying sensual pleasures (kāma) and making merit, take your delight. Your mother and father do not permit you to go forth from the home life into homelessness." When this was said, Sudinna the Kalandaka's son remained silent. A second time … A third time the companions of Sudinna the Kalandaka's son said this to Sudinna the Kalandaka's son: "Friend Sudinna, you are …" A third time Sudinna the Kalandaka's son remained silent. Then the companions of Sudinna the Kalandaka's son approached the mother and father of Sudinna the Kalandaka's son; having approached, they said this to the mother and father of Sudinna the Kalandaka's son: "Mother, father, this Sudinna is lying on the bare ground, saying: 'Right here there will be for me either death or the going forth.' If you do not permit Sudinna to go forth from the home life into homelessness, death will come to him right there. But if you permit Sudinna to go forth from the home life into homelessness, you will see him even as one gone forth. If Sudinna does not find delight in the going forth from the home life into homelessness, what other course will there be for him? He will come back right here. Permit Sudinna to go forth from the home life into homelessness." "We permit, dears, Sudinna to go forth from the home life into homelessness."
