[14] Then the companions of Sudinna Kalandaputta approached Sudinna Kalandaputta; having approached, they said this to Sudinna Kalandaputta: "Rise up, dear Sudinna! You have been permitted by your mother and father to go forth (pabbajjā) from the household life into homelessness." Then Sudinna Kalandaputta, [realizing] "It seems I have been permitted by my mother and father to go forth from the household life into homelessness," elated and joyful, rose up, stroking his limbs with his hand.
Then Sudinna Kalandaputta, having recovered his strength over a few days, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Sudinna Kalandaputta said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I have been permitted by my mother and father to go forth from the household life into homelessness. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One let me go forth." And Sudinna Kalandaputta received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; he received the full ordination (upasampadā).
And not long after his full ordination, the Venerable Sudinna undertook and observed ascetic practices (dhutaguṇa) such as these: he was a forest-dweller, an alms-food eater, a rag-robe wearer, and one who went for alms without skipping houses; and he dwelt in dependence on a certain village of the Vajjīs.
