[174] Now at that time two bhikkhus were companions: Paṇḍaka and Kapila. One dwelt in a village, the other in Kosambī. Then, as that bhikkhu was going from the village to Kosambī, while he was crossing a river along the way, a lump of fat (medavaṭṭi) that had slipped from the hands of some pork-butchers stuck to his foot. That bhikkhu took it, thinking, "I shall give it to the owners." The owners accused that bhikkhu: "You are not an ascetic (samaṇa)." A certain cowherd woman, seeing him having crossed over, said this: "Come, venerable sir, engage in sexual intercourse." He, thinking, "Even as it stands I am no ascetic," engaged in sexual intercourse with her, and having gone to Kosambī, he informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, there is no offense (āpatti) entailing pārājika in respect of taking what is not given (adinnādāna); there is an offense entailing pārājika in respect of engaging in sexual intercourse (methunadhamma)."
