[179] Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened and questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that bhikkhus deprive even themselves of life, deprive even one another of life, and even approach Migalaṇḍika the sham ascetic (samaṇakuttaka) and speak thus: 'It would be good, friend, if you would deprive us of life; this bowl and robe will be yours'?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, it is unbecoming of those bhikkhus, unfitting, unseemly, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How indeed, bhikkhus, could those bhikkhus deprive even themselves of life, deprive even one another of life, and even approach Migalaṇḍika the sham ascetic and speak thus: 'It would be good, friend, if you would deprive us of life; this bowl and robe will be yours'? Bhikkhus, this does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"'Whatever bhikkhu should intentionally deprive a human being of life, or should seek an assassin (satthahāraka) for him — he too is defeated (pārājika), not in communion.'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
