[195] "He praises by means of a messenger" (dūtena saṃvaṇṇeti) means: he communicates a message through a messenger, saying, "Whoever dies in such a way will obtain wealth, or obtain fame, or go to heaven" — an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Having heard the messenger's message, [the other person], thinking, "I shall die," gives rise to painful feeling (vedanā) — an offense of grave transgression (thullaccaya). He dies — an offense entailing defeat (pārājika).
"He praises by means of writing" (lekhāya saṃvaṇṇeti) means: he inscribes a writing, saying, "Whoever dies in such a way will obtain wealth, or obtain fame, or go to heaven" — for each and every letter, an offense of wrong-doing.
